English As A Second Language (ESL)
Our ESL program gives students the English language skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their Divine Word College courses. Students in the ESL program attend classes 18 to 21 hours a week and participate in many activities outside of class, including class expeditions and retreats related to spiritual discernment.
The English as a Second Language Institute at Divine Word College has its own computer lab for student use equipped with 10 computers. The lab is open 24/7, with a student assistant available during the evenings. In addition to a fast T1 connection to the internet, additional programs for learning English are also available, as are a wide variety of print reference texts and novels.
Our students come from Vietnam, Sudan, Poland and several other linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This dynamic mix helps enliven life at Divine Word College. This variety of perspective and experience enriches our class discussions. Outside the classroom, we have students giving presentations on their homeland, cooking cultural dinners, and playing ethnic music. These and many more shared activities help stretch our awareness of different backgrounds and our appreciation of different viewpoints.
