Biography:
Born in Vung Tau, South Vietnam, Father Tam fled his homeland in 1989 and entered a refugee camp in the Philippines where he studied English and American culture. A year later, at age 16, he came to the United States, sponsored by a Lutheran church in Jacksonville, Florida. A short time later, an aunt welcomed him to her home in San Leandro, California, where he attended a year of high school followed by almost three years in a community college. During this time, he began to seriously consider religious life and he discovered the Society of the Divine Word.  He enrolled in the ESL Institute at Divine Word College and entered the college. After his graduation from Divine Word College he entered the SVD Novitiate at Techny, Illinois, making his first vows in 2002. He travelled to Togo in West Africa for his Cross-Cultural Training Program where he spent the next three years.  Father Tam returned to the United States to complete his studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, earning his Master’s degree. He was ordained in 2009 and asked to be sent back to Togo for three years.  Father Tam returned to Divine Word College as a formator and instructor in Theology and Religious Studies in 2012.
