The Gift of Life - Formation group sponsors blood drive

The Thessalonian formation group as a community service project

Have you heard about the gift that doesn’t cost anything for you to give, requires just an hour of your time and burns about 650 unwanted calories when you give it? This unique gift can only come from you!

What is it?

The gift of life – a donation of blood.

On Monday, March 2, the Thessalonian Formation Group at Divine Word College, in conjunction with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, hosted a blood drive in the college gymnasium from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The formation group, led by Fr. Stephen Nguyen, SVD, consists of nine DWC students. One member of the team, sophomore David Cao, came up with the idea of having a blood drive at the beginning of the school year. “Each formation group has a charter and makes a list of things they plan to do for development as seminarians and to provide service to the school or community,” Cao says. “Bau Nguyen, our group’s contact person, wrote down our initial ideas. I coordinated the drive and everyone helped to make it successful.”

Prior to the clinic, the formation team phone committee contacted prospective donors in the surrounding area. DWC sophomore Thinh Duc Tran, another member of the Thessalonians, went from office to office at the college, soliciting donors from within the DWC community. The blood drive yielded 17 pints of blood collected from 22 donors.
