Summer ESL students do the zoo!

Jun 26, 2018

What can a zebra and giraffe teach about the English language?

A lot, according to Ms. Jean Floyd, instructor in the Intensive English Language Institute at Divine Word College. So much, in fact, that she and two other faculty organized a trip to the Niabi Zoo in nearby Coal Valley, Illinois. Students, faculty, tutors and a few family members boarded a charter bus on June 22 and headed south.

"The trip was designed to provide our students an opportunity to apply English listening and speaking skills as they learn about biodiversity," said Floyd. The students also encountered new vocabulary that will help them in their writing and speaking assignments for class.

Even though the weather wasn't the best for outdoor activity, the students enjoyed seeing the animals and in some cases feeding them.

All of the animals were interesting but according to the students their favorites were; meerkats, the porcupine, a reticulated python, the giraffes, the lion and the zebra.

The summer ESL session continues through July 13.
