The Certificate in Pre-Theology offers a program of foundational studies for men preparing for ordination to the priesthood, in accord with the guidelines provided in the Program of Priestly Formation (PPF). This certificate program is intended primarily for those who already possess at least a Bachelor’s degree in another academic discipline, but who lack the requisite philosophical and theological background stipulated by the PPF for admission into graduate-level theological programs at Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago or at other graduate-level theology institutions.

The curriculum is composed of forty-eight credit hours normally requiring two academic years of full-time study. The Certificate in Pre-Theology is also available to others preparing for graduate-level theological studies, but who are not seeking ordination to the priesthood.
